Hõbevalge Thesis

Lennart Meri's 1976 argument, developed across his book Hõbevalge and its themes, that the Kaali meteorite impact was witnessed and preserved in myth: as the Greek Phaethon legend, as the legendary island of Thule reached by the explorer Pytheas, and as a fire-from-the-sky episode in the Kalevala. The Phaethon strand has drawn some independent scholarly engagement; the Thule identification is widely rejected by classicists, and archaeologists find no clear material-culture break on Saaremaa at the proposed impact date.
