Mass Psychogenic Illness Explanation

The leading modern historical explanation, most fully argued by historian John Waller, that the 1518 dancing plague was a stress-induced mass psychogenic (dissociative trance) episode, triggered by severe famine, disease, and economic hardship in the region and shaped by a shared local belief that Saint Vitus could curse people with compulsive dancing.
