Royal Navy captain who commanded HMS Daedalus during its 6 August 1848 South Atlantic sea-serpent sighting; his formal report to the Admiralty, published in The Times, became one of the best-documented eyewitness accounts in sea-serpent history and the basis of a public dispute with comparative anatomist Richard Owen.
